Abstract : Introduction: One of the most common reasons of hospitalization in all over the world is poisoning. Suicidal or accidental Poisoning constantly spend a lot of health and treatment facilities. Considering this fact that, in Khoramabad city there was no study about incidence of poisoned patients who hospitalized in ICU, we design this study with purpose of epidemiological determination on poisoned patients who are hospitalized in ICU ward of Shohadaie Ashayer and Tamin-e-ejtemaei hospitals for a year (2006 Oct until 2007 Oct). Method & materials: This cross-sectional study was carried out on all patients who admitted in ICU of Shohadaie Ashayer and Tamin-e-ejtemaei hospitals during 2006 Oct until 2007 Oct. all poisoned patients who were hospitalized in ICU in this time period were determined. Some criteria such as age, gender, marital status, measurements of ABG, Na, K, BUN/Cr, WBC, Arrhythmia, hospitalization time, poisoning reason, outcome was extract from patients file and noted in check list. Results: Results showed that total numbers of poisoned patients in ICU were 250 people and the mean age was 25.25 years. 55.6% of patients were male and 44.4% were female. The frequency distribution of poisoning base on motivation was reported as intentional in 86.8%of cases and accidental in 13.2%. The mean of confinement days of poisoned patients in ICU were 2.3±2.2 days. Considering the mortality, 29 cases of patients were died. Conclusion: In present study, the most common poisoning reasons were multi drugs, TCA, opioids, benzodiazepine and agriculture toxins with decreasing frequency. There was significant relationship between motivation and poisoning reason. The accidental poisoning reasons mostly were toxin of mushrooms, overdose of alcohol or opium and snake toxin. In Lorestan province which is an agricultural province, the most common reason for poisoning death is agriculture toxin. Totally 1% of all poisoned patients have been died that is match with global standards. Keyword: poisoning, toxin, ICU ward
